At 5:18 a.m. on May 9, 1992, in Plymouth, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, in the Westray Mine, a methane gas explosion, followed by a coal dust blast, ripped through the underground tunnels, claiming the lives of 26 miners working the night shift. The tragedy unfolded against a backdrop of known safety violations and ignored warnings. In the aftermath, a gripping rescue attempt captivated the nation as teams of drägermen braved hazardous conditions in a desperate search for survivors. The bodies of 15 miners were recovered during the initial rescue and recovery efforts. However, the remains of 11 miners were never recovered and remain entombed deep within the mine to this day. Despite criminal charges being filed against the mine owners and its management, no convictions were secured due to the complexity of establishing legal responsibility. More than ten years later, the federal government introduced amendments to the Criminal Code in response to this tragedy.

Episode 206: Starting on the evening of June 29 and going into the early morning of June 30, 2002, Lisa Marie Young, a 21-year-old indigenous woman, was celebrating with friends in her hometown, Nanaimo, B.C. It was not only Canada Day long weekend, but also her friend Dallas’s birthday. The group went to several nightclubs and then attended a pair of house parties outside the city. Lisa left the party with a man the group had met just that evening. There were several frantic texts from Lisa shortly after her departure indicating she was afraid. Lisa Marie Young has not been heard from since. The man she was seen with while leaving the party was later identified as a local 27-year-old man named Christopher William Adair. Adair now refuses to speak to police and has left the country. Nanaimo RCMP presume Lisa has been murdered and her remains have never been found. In the days before the recording of this podcast, an anonymous donor contacted advocates for Lisa offering $50,000 reward to locate her remains. It’s time to bring Lisa home. Episode 181 - The region in the South Nahanni River played host to several unexplained and disturbing occurrences in the first half of the twentieth century. Between1905 and 1945, in the remote and rugged wilderness in the lower west corner of Mackenzie Mountains in the Northwest Territories and other unexplained events, there were at least 44 people who went missing under mysterious circumstances. Most unsettling of all were the four bodies that were found during that time in three separate incidents. All of the corpses had been decapitated, and their heads were never recovered, earning the area the ominous nickname, the Valley of the Headless Men. No one knows who was responsible for these horrific mutilations or what became of the other missing people.
